WebBBS

WebBBS is a Web-based bulletin board. WebBBS stores messages as simple text files and creates HTML pages "on the fly." This means that the message index can be tailored by the user based on date and/or subject (via built-in keyword search capability), and can be viewed as either a chronological or a threaded list. Administration is also a breeze! WebBBS supports automatic quoting of message text and e-mail notification of those who want to know immediately when a new message has been posted. It also offers an archive-only option and "cookie" support!

You can't beat this one and the fact that it's free (includes admin script when registered) is beyond me. At this time (ver. 4.12), some efficiency issues have been dealt with and the programmer seems very open to constantly improving his product. Nice features and very customizable both for the installer and the viewers.

Very good script if you plan to have only one forum. If you want more, find a more complex script.

Very good script, it would be perfect if the author didn't want $50 for the admin script! This is real expensive... You can live without it though...

What's newer than a newbie? I don't know, but that is what I was in regards to Perl and CGI. Notwithstanding that, I managed to get it up and running in a few hours on two different servers. Good program!

Very powerful BBS, all the options can be setup through one config file that offers a lot of settings, making the script very customizable. It's not perfect, because it looks rather old fashioned and there is not even a simple admin interface before you register.

Not a bad script for very low traffic sites, but so inefficient that any site that receives decent traffic will find their server load go through the roof. Needs an update badly.

Overall, a great script. Very customizable, and very simple to set up -- you can have a board running in 10 minutes. The best board around for fairly low-traffic sites. Once you have many messages being posted, the script becomes too slow and the interface too klunky -- in that case, I'd recommend another script. Still, a wonderful script. The administration script is not free, but with the built-in message removal function, you won't need it.

After sampling quite a few boards, I found this one to be the easiest and most flexible of them all. I especially like the cookie support.
