Excellent script. The admin utility is intuitive and smooth. The pages look good too. The only drawback is that Perl library Mail::SMTP is needed to get the e-mail function to work. Needs native SMTP for Windows hosts. Tech support is excellent, install not too bad if they create the distribution. This can be done at their web site.

If you want a good, easy to use, stable, board with plenty of features and no gimmicks, then try Discus. It's easy to install and well documented. Use it straight out of the box or customize it.

Well written, solid script that's easy to install. While it offers extensive ways to customize the layout, customization can quickly become complicated - especially for beginners. Default installation uses frames, and support and instructions for frameless setup are not well implemented.

Very powerful script which is also easy to set up and use. Instructions and documentation are excellent.

Nice forum, but it cracks under load. At 10,000 posts the search slows down and a lot of admin features start to fail. Easy to use. Served me well for about a year.

Discus is a powerful message forum. It is worth thousands of dollars. Even the free version is better than any other forum script I have worked with.

A great script which installed easily. Looks good and has customized skins. A nice change from the old threaded look. Spellchecker is a nice addition.

Discus is easy to set up. The directions are easy to follow. It took about half an hour to install. After installing I ran into many problems.

It seems interesting at first, but it takes forever to install with dozens of files and CGI scripts and it's a nightmare to customize it. Also, I don't like the layout with frames.

Not bad, but resource-intensive. Flat files make it impossible to spread the load across multiple machines. Probably not a good choice for heavily visited sites.

This is a wonderful program with full customization and a great interface. Don't let the demo fool you. The demo is just as just as good and better than any other $500 message board system. The pro version is just for those with added needs.

I have been running 4 of these forums for two years and all I can say is forget everything else. This is easy to install, the easiest I have ever seen for perl, the folks at hope college are super friendly, and you can have pics posted.

I tried two boards at the same time and Discus went up in a few minutes. The script is great -- it's flawless in it's delivery, loads quickly and is relatively simple. The only drawback - it doesn't allow user self-registration, which is only available on the Pro version. I can't see paying $99 to allow user self-registration. Otherwise, this is a great script.

I have been using Discus on my site since April, 1998. It is easy to install, and the Pro version ($99) has powerful archiving features. The topic-oriented message structure plus keyword search features encourage discussion. Our board has become a popular and integral part of our site. Tech support is fantastic.

Very nice bulletin board script with many nice features. I use it on my site, but I must say, that script customization was tough for me -- I wanted to show banners on every page and it was really tough to implement (many different files needed to be changed manually, so now upgrading to latest version is out of the question).

User: charlyRating:July 12, 1999

Script does its job. Automatic setup is easy, manually is a mess. There are better scripts, which do the same job.

Very nice. Easy to set up with good documentation, but using the custom markup tags are a pain. Jury is still out on non-threaded messages.

User: JoergRating:June 05, 1999

Powerful script with the best admin interface I have seen, yet it lacks threading and easy inclusion of URLs and images, setup is a horror and the powerful admin GUI eats up a lot of space on the webserver for graphics and HTML templates.

User: bfprusiaRating:June 02, 1999

The easiest script I have ever installed. I am only 15 and I got this done in a flash, without opening the CGI file itself.

The linear format is a blessing! You might miss the threads at first, but without them, discussions don't become a big, insane web of links. It's an addictive format! There are users who have been at my board for a year. If it was threaded, with 170-200 messages a day, we'd have to clear the board every single day. But this way, there are discussions that have actually stayed alive for a full year. And you don't gotta click 200 times to read them! Everything about Discus is great! And EASY!

It basically did everything for me! I was really amazed. It doesn't look like you'd expect, so it might take a little getting used to for your visitors, but they'll get over it!

My biggest concern when I add a resource to my site: Is it stable? It doesn't need to have every feature in the world as long as what is in place works nicely, support is decent, and the user base is sufficient so that upgrades will be forthcoming. This fits the bill in all areas. Setup is easy. I was able to prepare and maintain a user list separately, from my main site, without too much hassle. Message searching is very nice. The threading issue hasn't been a problem.

Discus is good, but not good enough. Threading is one important feature that Discus lacks and the documentation tree on the navigation bar (left) is a disattraction... Scores well in installation and interface is OK, but nothing great or wonderfull.

Well done, guys! The implementation was pleasingly 'sophisticated' and made easy. While I agree the interface could be more contemporary, a little work and you are in the ballpark! Coming from a senior systems analyst, the script is well-written, stable and efficient - a natural choice for us.

This script is extremely easy to install and extremely easy to use, but also very annoying. It consists of more than 140 files in 8 different locations!

User: skiltechRating:February 06, 1999

Highly recommended! The self-installing script is easy enough that someone with no CGI experience could get it right the first time. The Pro version ($99) is worth every penny. I've installed the free version on six sites and the Pro version on three others. All of them work like a charm and are very popular among users.

For almost half a year now we have used first Discus and then Discus Pro, and it's definitely the best bulletin board software ever developed. I'm not a newbie to CGI programming but the quality of perl scripts used in Discus is really amazing. Forget threading, in fact Discus supports a similar idea, it just gives it to you in a different manner. Installation and support is simply great.

I give it a big two thumbs up! This self-installing script is the easiest and best message board that there is on the net. Even the free version is worth every penny that they are asking for the Pro version and more!
